DETAILS: The traditional Hawaiian conch shell, ‘Pu”, calls Wai’anae youth workers at MA’O Organic Farms to a opening circle where they are centred and get instructions for the day. In exchange for their work, they get college tuition and a stipend. MA’O is an acronym taken from Māla (garden) ʻai (eat) ōpio (youth); youth give to the land and the land gives back to them. The program reclaims the value of feeding your people, reduces dependence on outside sources of food, encourages completion of education and creates youthful leaders.
